It pays to sort your incoming mail into groups for scanning.
For example separate out:

  • purchases into cash or on account
  • bank transactions
  • credit card transactions
  • expense reports
  • incoming letters

The grouping makes scanning go a little smoother. Once scanned the source document is no longer needed for accounting purposes and can be filed or discarded since we will now use the scanned image as source for all accounting transactions.
